Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

My Thoughts:

I'm a big fan of Mindy Kaling. I watched The Office from the beginning when everyone thought it was a pretty weird show. But I loved it and I especially loved Mindy. After The Office came The Mindy Project (poorly titled, IMHO) which has forever cemented my love for Mindy! Learning more about Mindy Kaling by reading Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me and seeing where she had come from was pretty awesome! She worked really hard to get where she is and it shines through in her book!

Mindy is so funny and I really like how she can poke fun of her past and her struggles.  She is a woman of color who has embraced that part of herself and has used it to be the funny woman that she is now. I definitely enjoyed reading about her memorable childhood moments and her unlucky in love relationships. She puts a funny spin on everything and makes it very fun to read. I love that she didn't change her body to meet what is usually considered the "standard" for women in show-business. To me, she really represents the average woman and she's not afraid to eat what she wants.

I love Mindy's character on The Mindy Project and if she's anything like her character in real life, then she seems like a really fun and awesome person to know! Mindy always seems to have an adventure up her sleeve and I'm so glad she's writing another book! It's definitely going on my must read list!
