Waiting on Wednesday (140)

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we are eagerly anticipating. This is one of my favorite memes because not only is my TBR pile so much bigger at the end of the night but also the covers are always amazing!

Title: Even When You Lie to Me
Author: Jessica Alcott
Hitting the Shelves: June 09, 2015

Charlie, a senior, isn't looking forward to her last year of high school. Another year of living in the shadow of her best friend, Lila. Another year of hiding behind the covers of her favorite novels. Another year of navigating her tense relationship with her perfectionist mom.

But everything changes when she meets her new English teacher. Mr. Drummond is smart. Irreverent. Funny. Hot. Everyone loves him. And Charlie thinks he's the only one who gets her.

She also thinks she might not be the only one with a crush.

In this stunning debut, Jessica Alcott explores relationships-and their boundaries-in a way that is both searingly honest and sympathetic.

Why I want this: I would have to say that Even When You Lie to Me is one of my most anticipated contemporary releases this year! A girl in high school and the forbidden relationship of a teacher. I think this story just sounds so interesting and I can't wait to eat it up! I'm definitely interested to see how this story plays out and how much scandal is actually written into it! I can't wait to get my hands on it!

Waiting on Wednesday (139)

Title: Charlie, Presumed Dead
Author: Anne Heltzel
Hitting the Shelves: June 02, 2015

In Paris, family and friends gather to mourn the tragic passing of Charlie Price—young, handsome, charming, a world-traveler—who is presumed dead after an explosion. Authorities find only a bloodied jacket, ID’d as Charlie’s. At the funeral, two teens who are perfect strangers, Lena Whitney and Aubrey Boroughs, make another shocking discovery: they have both been dating Charlie, both think Charlie loved them and them alone, and there is a lot they didn’t know about their boyfriend. Over the next week, a mind-bending trip unfolds: first in London—then in Mumbai, Kerala, and Bangkok, the girls go in search of Charlie. Is he still alive? What did their love for him even mean? The truth is out there, but soon it becomes clear that the girls are harboring secrets of their own.

No one knows whom to trust in this thrilling tale of suspense and deception.

Why I want this: First of all, that cover is awesome and second of all, that synopsis just left me wanting to know what happened to this Charlie character and who is he really? I just want to know all the answers! I'm also a little hesitant. In 2011, I read Heltzel's first book Circle 9 and it was absolutly terrible! One of the worst books I read that year. But then again that was three years ago and hopefully her writing and storytelling has improved by leaps and bounds. Here's to hoping!

Title: Court of Fives
Author: Kate Elliott
Hitting the Shelves: August 18, 2015

In this imaginative escape into an enthralling new world, World Fantasy Award finalist Kate Elliott begins a new trilogy with her debut young adult novel, weaving an epic story of a girl struggling to do what she loves in a society suffocated by rules of class and privilege.

Jessamy's life is a balance between acting like an upper class Patron and dreaming of the freedom of the Commoners. But at night she can be whomever she wants when she sneaks out to train for The Fives, an intricate, multi-level athletic competition that offers a chance for glory to the kingdom's best competitors. Then Jes meets Kalliarkos, and an unlikely friendship between a girl of mixed race and a Patron boy causes heads to turn. When a scheming lord tears Jes's family apart, she'll have to test Kal's loyalty and risk the vengeance of a powerful clan to save her mother and sisters from certain death.

Why I want this: I love fantasy and I probably always will so I'm always on the hunt for the next great fantasy series. I don't know if this will be it but I'm willing to read it and try it out. Even though I've never heard of Kate Elliott it seems like she's a pretty well known fantasy writer. 2015 really seems like it's going to be a great year for fantasy!

Title: The Proof of Forever
Author: Lexa Hillyer
Hitting the Shelves: June 02, 2015

BEFORE: It was the perfect summer of first kisses, skinny-dipping, and bonfires by the lake. Joy, Tali, Luce, and Zoe knew their final summer at Camp Okahatchee would come to an end, but they swore they’d stay friends.

AFTER: Now, two years later, their bond has faded along with those memories.

THEN: That is, until the fateful flash of a photo booth camera transports the four of them back in time, to the summer they were fifteen—the summer everything changed.

NOW: The girls must recreate the past in order to return to the present. As they live through their second-chance summer, the mystery behind their lost friendship unravels, and a dark secret threatens to tear the girls apart all over again.

ALWAYS: Summers end. But this one will change them forever.

Why I want this: I am such a sucker for young adult contemporaries like this! The Proof of Forever sounds so cute and I love a good book about friendship. I'm on a contemporary kick right now and I think I'm really going to enjoy this one!

Title: Illusionarium
Author: Heather Dixon
Hitting the Shelves: May 19, 2015

From the author of Entwined, a brilliantly conceived adventure through an alternate London. This sweeping, cinematic tale of an apprentice scientist desperate to save his family—and his world—is The Night Circus meets Pixar.

Through richly developed parallel worlds, vivid action, a healthy dose of humor, and gorgeous writing, Heather Dixon spins a story that is breathtaking and wholly original.

Why I want this: There is something about this book that is drawing me in like a moth to a flame. I can't really say what it is! The cover is breathtaking and the synopsis is so short and so mysterious! I can't put my finger on it but I'm definitely going to read it soon!

Title: Hold Me Like a Breath
Author: Tiffany Schmidt
Hitting the Shelves: May 19, 2015

Penelope Landlow has grown up with the knowledge that almost anything can be bought or sold—including body parts. She’s the daughter of one of the three crime families that control the black market for organ transplants.

Penelope’s surrounded by all the suffocating privilege and protection her family can provide, but they can't protect her from the autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise so easily.

And in her family's line of work no one can be safe forever.

All Penelope has ever wanted is freedom and independence. But when she’s caught in the crossfire as rival families scramble for prominence, she learns that her wishes come with casualties, that betrayal hurts worse than bruises, that love is a risk worth taking . . . and maybe she’s not as fragile as everyone thinks.

Why I want this: Do I want to read about a girl whose family sells human organs on the black market? YES! This book sounds sooooo good! But then I see that cover and that title. That cover and that title tell me that this book is going to be a contemporary romance without reading the synopsis. I want this book to have a really sinister cover! And a way better title! Come on marketing and cover design department! What were you thinking? This cover does not scream "organs sold on the black market!" Nevertheless, I will most likely read it!

Title: A Reunion of Ghosts
Author: Judith Claire Mitchell
Hitting the Shelves: March 24, 2015

A compulsively readable literary masterpiece, A Reunion of Ghosts is the shared confessional of three sisters who have decided to kill themselves at the end of the 20th century, honoring the dark legacy that has haunted their extraordinary family for decades

How do three sisters write a single suicide note?

In the waning days of 1999, the Alter sisters—Lady, Vee, and Delph—finalize their plans to end their lives. Their reasons are not theirs alone; they are the last in a long line of Alters who have killed themselves, beginning with their great-grandmother, the wife of a Jewish Nobel Prize-winning chemist who developed the first poison gas used in World War I and the lethal agent used in Third Reich gas chambers. The chemist himself, their son Richard, and Richard’s children all followed suit.

The childless sisters also define themselves by their own bad luck. Lady, the oldest, never really resumed living after her divorce. Vee is facing cancer’s return. And Delph, the youngest, is resigned to a spinster’s life of stifled dreams. But despite their pain they love each other fiercely, and share a darkly brilliant sense of humor.

As they gather in the ancestral Upper West Side apartment to close the circle of the Alter curse, an epic story about four generations of one family—inspired in part by the troubled life of German-Jewish Fritz Haber, Nobel Prize winner and inventor of chlorine gas—unfolds. A Reunion of Ghosts is a magnificent tale of fate and blood, sin and absolution; partly a memoir of sisters unified by a singular burden, partly an unflinching eulogy of those who have gone before, and above all a profound commentary on the events of the 20th century.

Why I want this: That cover is absolutely stunning! This book just sounds so amazing!

Title: Of Things Gone Astray
Author: Janina Matthewson
Hitting the Shelves: February 03, 2015

Mrs Featherby had been having pleasant dreams until she woke to discover the front of her house had vanished overnight …
On a seemingly normal morning in London, a group of people all lose something dear to them, something dear but peculiar: the front of their house, their piano keys, their sense of direction, their place of work.
Meanwhile, Jake, a young boy whose father brings him to London following his mother’s sudden death in an earthquake, finds himself strangely attracted to other people’s lost things. But little does he realize that his most valuable possession, his relationship with his dad, is slipping away from him.
Of Things Gone Astray is a magical fable about modern life and values. Perfect for fans of Andrew Kaufman and Cecelia Ahern.

Why I want this: OMG that cover is absolutely fabulous! This past year I have really been trying to add some more adult fiction books into my reading and I have been enjoying what I've read immensely! Of Things Gone Astray sounds very engrossing and definitely on my must read list for next year!

Title: Get Dirty
Author: Gretchen McNeil
Series: Don't Get Mad #2
Hitting the Shelves: June 16, 2014

The members of Don’t Get Mad aren't just mad anymore . . . they’re afraid. And with Margot in a coma and Bree stuck in juvie, it’s up to Olivia and Kitty to try to catch their deadly tormentor. But just as the girls are about to go on the offensive, Ed the Head reveals a shocking secret that turns all their theories upside down. The killer could be anyone, and this time he—or she—is out for more than just revenge.
The girls desperately try to discover the killer’s identity as their personal lives are falling apart: Donté is pulling away from Kitty and seems to be hiding a secret of his own, Bree is under house arrest, and Olivia’s mother is on an emotional downward spiral. The killer is closing in, the threats are becoming more personal, and when the police refuse to listen, the girls have no choice but to confront their anonymous friend . . . or die trying.

Why I want this: I am on the edge of my seat waiting for this book to be release or at least put on Edelweiss so I can get my grubby little hands on it! I must, must, must know what happens next! The suspense is killing me! If you haven't read Get Even yet, you need to get on that!

Title: The Winner's Crime
Author: Marie Rutkoski
Series: The Winner's Trilogy #2
Hitting the Shelves: March 03, 2015

Book two of the dazzling Winner's Trilogy is a fight to the death as Kestrel risks betrayal of country for love.

The engagement of Lady Kestrel to Valoria’s crown prince means one celebration after another. But to Kestrel it means living in a cage of her own making. As the wedding approaches, she aches to tell Arin the truth about her engagement…if she could only trust him. Yet can she even trust herself? For—unknown to Arin—Kestrel is becoming a skilled practitioner of deceit: an anonymous spy passing information to Herran, and close to uncovering a shocking secret.

As Arin enlists dangerous allies in the struggle to keep his country’s freedom, he can’t fight the suspicion that Kestrel knows more than she shows. In the end, it might not be a dagger in the dark that cuts him open, but the truth. And when that happens, Kestrel and Arin learn just how much their crimes will cost them.

Why I want this: I'm pretty sure everyone loved The Winner's Curse and I was no exception. The Winner's Trilogy is one of my favorite new series out right now and I can't wait to continue the story with The Winner's Crime!

Title: The Cemetery Boys
Author: Heather Brewer
Hitting the Shelves: March 30, 2015

When Stephen is forced to move back to the nowhere town where his father grew up, he’s already sure he’s not going to like it. Spencer, Michigan, is like a town straight out of a Hitchcock movie, with old-fashioned people who see things only in black-and-white. But things start looking up when Stephen meets the mysterious twins Cara and Devon. They’re total punks–hardly the kind of people Stephen’s dad wants him hanging out with–but they’re a breath of fresh air in this backward town. The only problem is, Cara and Devon don’t always get along, and as Stephen forms a friendship with the charismatic Devon and something more with the troubled Cara, he starts to feel like he’s getting caught in the middle of a conflict he doesn't fully understand. And as Devon’s group of friends, who hang out in a cemetery they call The Playground, get up to increasingly reckless activities to pass the summer days, Stephen worries he may be in over his head.

Stephen’s fears prove well-founded when he learns of Spencer’s dark past. It seems the poor factory town has a history of “bad times,” and many of the town’s oldest residents attribute the bad times to creatures right out of an urban legend. The legend goes that the only way the town will prosper again is if someone makes a sacrifice to these nightmarish creatures. And while Stephen isn't one to believe in old stories, it seems Devon and his gang might put a lot of faith in them. Maybe even enough to kill for them.

Now, Stephen has to decide what he believes, where his allegiances lie, and who will really be his friend in the end.

Why I want this: WHO DOESN'T WANT TO READ HEATHER BREWER'S NEW BOOK!!!! But seriously! It sounds awesome! My only gripe is that it's not going to be released until March when I think it should be released during October! A creepy book for a creepy time of year. It's going to be awesome no matter when I read it but it's definitely something I would want to read before Halloween!

Title: The Walled City
Author: Ryan Graudin
Hitting the Shelves: November 04, 2014

There are three rules in the Walled City: Run fast. Trust no one. Always carry your knife. Right now, my life depends completely on the first. Run, run, run.

Jin, Mei Yee, and Dai all live in the Walled City, a lawless labyrinth run by crime lords and overrun by street gangs. Teens there run drugs or work in brothels—or, like Jin, hide under the radar. But when Dai offers Jin a chance to find her lost sister, Mei Yee, she begins a breathtaking race against the clock to escape the Walled City itself.

Why I want this: 1. YA dystopian. 2. Sounds full of adventure. 3. Awesome cover! I like that the cover doesn't give anything away.  Just the big typography and what looks like a labyrinth of walls. 4. Possible Asian influence and diverse characters. 5. Maybe a new series? We'll see.  But it all sounds really awesome!

Title: Blood of My Blood
Author: Barry Lyga
Series: Jasper Dent #3
Hitting the Shelves: September 09, 2014

Jazz Dent has been shot and left to die in New York City. His girlfriend Connie is in the clutches of Jazz's serial killer father, Billy. And his best friend Howie is bleeding to death on the floor of Jazz's own home in tiny Lobo's Nod. Somehow, these three must rise above the horrors their lives have become and find a way to come together in pursuit of Billy. But then Jazz crosses a line he's never crossed before, and soon the entire country is wondering: "Like father, like son?" Who is the true monster?
The chase is on, and beyond Billy there lurks something much, much worse. Prepare to meet...the Crow King.

Why I want this: I love reading about serial killers and I have been a big fan of this series since day one! I'm so excited to see how this ends! I would say this is a mix of Criminal Minds and that ID show Nightmare Next Door. There's not a lot of hype surrounding it but I would totally recommend it to those who love a good mystery. It's all about nature vs. nurture and I'm excited to see which one wins out in the end!

This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying many of the experiences that other teenagers take for granted...which is why she is determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem - one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruellest of all the Crucibles is Lillian . . . Lily's identical other self in this alternate universe. This new version of her world is terrifyingly sensual, and Lily is soon overwhelmed by new experiences.

But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

Why I want this: Alternate universe? Check. Witches? Check. Salem witch trials? Check.  Pretty much everything I love thrown into one book! Awesome!! And I will definitely be reading it soon :) Here's hoping it's everything I hope and dream it will be!

Title: The Whispering Skull
Author: Jonathan Stroud
Series: Lockwood & Co. #2
Hitting the Shelves: September 16, 2014

In the six months since Anthony, Lucy, and George survived a night in the most haunted house in England, Lockwood & Co. hasn't made much progress. Quill Kipps and his team of Fittes agents keep swooping in on Lockwood's investigations. Finally, in a fit of anger, Anthony challenges his rival to a contest: the next time the two agencies compete on a job, the losing side will have to admit defeat in the Times newspaper.

Things look up when a new client, Mr. Saunders, hires Lockwood & Co. to be present at the excavation of Edmund Bickerstaff, a Victorian doctor who reportedly tried to communicate with the dead. Saunders needs the coffin sealed with silver to prevent any supernatural trouble. All goes well-until George's curiosity attracts a horrible phantom.

Back home at Portland Row, Lockwood accuses George of making too many careless mistakes. Lucy is distracted by urgent whispers coming from the skull in the ghost jar. Then the team is summoned to DEPRAC headquarters. Kipps is there too, much to Lockwood's annoyance. Bickerstaff's coffin was raided and a strange glass object buried with the corpse has vanished. Inspector Barnes believes the relic to be highly dangerous, and he wants it found.

The author of the blockbuster Bartimaeus series delivers another amusing, chilling, and ingeniously plotted entry in the critically acclaimed Lockwood & Co. series.

Why I Want This: I just finished reading Lockwood & Co. #1: The Screaming Staircase this morning and it was pretty great! Once you get immersed into this world it's hard to knot want more right away! Luckily this book comes out soon and I scored an ARC at ALA! Definitely going to be reading it soon! Happy reading!

The enemy that wiped out half her people lurks there, attacking at night and keeping them isolated in an unfamiliar land with merciless winters. Living with the shame of her grandmother’s insubordination, Emmeline has learned to keep her head down and her quick tongue silent.

The trail leads to a secret that someone in the village will kill to protect. Her grandmother followed the same path and paid the price. If Emmeline isn't careful, she will be next.

Why I want this: 1. Debut author. 2. Creepy fall/winter book set in the woods. 3. Awesome cover! The typography is especially great! Author: Cherie Priest
Hitting the Shelves: September 02, 2014

Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty whacks; and when she saw what she had done, she gave her father forty-one....

The people of Fall River, Massachusetts, fear me. Perhaps rightfully so. I remain a suspect in the brutal deaths of my father and his second wife despite the verdict of innocence at my trial. With our inheritance, my sister, Emma, and I have taken up residence in Maplecroft, a mansion near the sea and far from gossip and scrutiny.

But it is not far enough from the affliction that possessed my parents. Their characters, their very souls, were consumed from within by something that left malevolent entities in their place. It originates from the ocean’s depths, plaguing the populace with tides of nightmares and madness.

This evil cannot hide from me. No matter what guise it assumes, I will be waiting for it. With an axe.

Why I want this: Lizzie Borden??!!??? YES!!!!! This sounds like the epitome of horror stories to me! I just received an ARC at ALA and I'm definitely going to start it soon!!! I hope I love it!

Title: Falls the Shadow
Author: Stefanie Gaither
Hitting the Shelves: September 16, 2014

When Cate Benson was twelve, her sister died.

Two hours after the funeral, they picked up Violet’s replacement, and it was like nothing had ever happened. Because Cate’s parents are among those who decided to grant their children a sort of immortality—by cloning them at birth. So this new Violet has the same smile. The same laugh. That same perfect face. Thanks to advancements in mind-uploading technology, she even has all the same memories as the girl she replaced.

She also might have murdered the most popular girl in school.

Or at least, that’s what the paparazzi and crazy anti-cloning protesters want everyone to think: that clones are violent, unpredictable monsters. Cate is used to hearing all that, though. She’s used to standing up for her sister too, and she’s determined to prove her innocence now—at whatever the cost. But the deeper she digs for the truth, the further Cate's carefully-constructed life begins to unravel, unveiling a world filled with copies and lies, where nothing and no one—not even her sister— is completely what they seem.
