Follow Friday (33)

Follow Friday is a really fun way to network your blog and meet some other really cool bloggers in the process! This weekly event is hosted at Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read.  This week's featured blogger is The Storybook Kingdom.

This week's question:

Pick a book in your favorite genre that you would recommend to a reluctant reader.

Well, lately my favorite genre has been fantasy and I just can't seem to get my hands on enough fantasy novels.  I love it so much because the worlds are so completely different than anything we live in right now. And fantasy also shows how creative and unique authors can be. I also love dystopia but there's just something special about fantasy.

I only recently read Throne of Glass like a month ago and it was just so good! There's so many different elements going on and it makes me excited that it's going to be a long series!

Q: You are a matchmaker -- your goal, hook up two characters from two of your favorite books. Who would it be? How do you think it would go?

A: I would like to put Patch from Hush, Hush is the same room with Clara from Unearthly and just be a fly on the wall.  I don't expect anything romantic to happen between the two of them but I would really like to hear the kind of conversations they would have.  Either Clara would absolutely hate him and she would want to help him get his his wing back.  She might think it's her purpose!

I don't know what my obsession with Patch is today but I think things between Patch and Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone could get pretty hot and heavy.  I think he's the type of bad boy she would definitely go for!

Thanks for reading and following my blog! Leave me a comment so I can read some of your match ups!

Q: This Sunday in the U.S. is Mother's Day. In celebration, what are some of your favorite books with strong mother/child relationships?

A: When I actually sit down and think about it, I'm having a really hard time finding a YA book that has a strong mother/child relationship.  I've noticed a lot of books have absent parents or the main characters are off to boarding school.  The only book that I can think of off the top of my head is Divergent by Veronica Roth.  I really enjoyed the relationship between Tris and her mother.

Of course, I can't do a post about mother/child relationships and not talk about Little House on the Prairie. It was one of my favorite series growing up and they're such good, wholesome books for younger kids!

Q: What is one thing you wish you could tell your favorite author?

A: Even though I don't consider Stephen King to be my favorite author, he definitely plays a pivotal role in my reading history.  I read Carrie in the seventh grade and ever since then I knew that I absolutely loved to read horror.  I was enraptured.  My love of horror and supernatural then led me to read Twilight many years later which naturally brought me into YA.  So I would say to Stephen King, thank you so much for writing incredibly creepy books that I stumbled upon during my horror movie phase. Carrie was the start of something big in my life, a love that has lasted for many, many years.

Q: Fight! Fight! If you could have two fictional characters battle it out (preferably from books), who would they be and who do you think would win?

A: Since Rose from Vampire Academy is one of my favorite strong female characters, I would love to see her fight anyone! But in this particular instance I would like to see her fight Katniss from the Hunger Games.  I would really like to see how Rose's brute force and physical strength matches Katniss' incredible cleverness.  I think it would be an interesting match!

Q: What is one book that you would be nervous to see a movie adaption of because you think the movie could never live up to the book?

A: As much as I love seeing my favorite books come to life on the big screen, there are a few that I would rather be left alone.  I believe a movie could never capture the awesomeness that is the Unearthly series by Cynthia Hand or Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.  These were some of my most favorite reads from last year and I would prefer them to continue to live on the page and in my imagination.  I would hate for a poorly made movie and unwise casting ruin some great books!

Follow Friday is a really fun way to network your blog and meet some other really cool bloggers in the process! This weekly event is hosted by Alison Can Read.  This week's featured blogger is Novel Days.

Q:  Have you ever looked at a book's cover and thought, This is going to horrible? But, was instead pleasantly surprised? Show us the cover and tell us about the book.

The first book that comes to mind for me is Divergent by Veronica Roth (my review).  I did not like this cover at all before I read it.  I thought it was going to be some weird action book that I was going to have no interest in. But, because of the amazing reviews it was getting, I bought it.  And then it sat on my nightstand, just staring at me, daring me to read it.  It must have sat there for a good two months at least.  Then, as most of you have experienced, I started it and finished it the next day because it was SO GOOD! And now I think it's the perfect cover for that book.

Another cover that just didn't appeal to me right from the beginning is Going Too Far by Jennifer Echols (my review).  I bought it, again, because I had heard she is one of the best YA contemporary writers out there right now.  So I bought the book but it sat on my shelf for about three months before I cracked it open.  then, for some reason I can't remember now, I read the first chapter and put it down without finishing it.  I didn't even think about it again until about a year later when I read another review saying how awesome it is.  So I grabbed the book off my shelf, sat down and read it in literally a couple of hours.  It has now become one of my all time favorite books!  And I would never want it to have a different cover!

As always, thanks for following my blog and don't forget to subscribe to my feed if you can!!  Happy reading everyone!

Follow Friday is hosted by Alison Can Read and this week's featured blogger is Omnon Books!

Q: Define what characteristics your favorite books share. Do they all have a kickass heroine or is the hot love interest the Alpha Male?

A: I enjoy books that keep me on the edge of my seat! It doesn't necessarily have to have a lot of action but as long as the story grabs me and keeps my attention then I usually love it.  I also like mystery books when then ending comes from left field and I never saw it coming.  I don't like when I can guess what's going to happen.  I also enjoy well-rounded characters such as Karu from Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Clara from Unearthly and Jessica Darling.  Writing style affects my feelings towards books as well.  I love a beautifully written book.

Follow Friday is hosted by Alison Can Read and this week's featured blogger is Fiction Fervor!

Q: Which book genre do you avoid at all costs and why?

A: I generally enjoy most genres within YA and Adult fiction.  I read almost everything from contemporary, dystopia, paranormal, sci-fi, historical fiction, horror and chick-lit.  But I have never read any non-fiction books.  They're just not my style.  When I was in college, I had to read a couple of self-help type books and I also try to stay away from those as well.  They're boring and I have a hard time relating to them.

Follow Friday (24)

Hosted by Alison Can Read

Question of the Week: Many readers/bloggers are also big music fans. Tell us about a few of your favorite bands/singers that we should listen to in 2012.

When I was in college and only had time to read textbooks, I listened to a lot of music.  Epsecially music that didn't have a lot of words and some music that didn't have words at all.  I didn't really like classical music, so I sought out modern instrumental bands.  I disvoered Explosions in the Sky which is my favorite instrumental band!

Some of my other favorite bands include:

Death Cab for Cutie
She & Him
The Civil Wars
Ingrid Michaelson
Regina Spektor
Rilo Kiley
Florence and the Machine

Here is another favorite! Boyce Avenue does a lot of covers and they're awesome!
